Workshop: Phonological Awareness – The Importance of Pre-phonics to Be Successful in Learning Phonics

Language of presentation: English (without simultaneous interpretation)

School: YCIS Shanghai Puxi

Abstract: Phonological awareness is the best predictor of reading success. - David Kilpatrick.

Phonological awareness is the foundation for learning to read. It’s the ability to recognize and work with sounds in spoken language. Reading does not begin with learning to sound out letters. Phonological awareness is predecessor to phonics. Most young children are getting ready to read long before they understand that letters stand for sounds. They start by gaining a language skill called phonological awareness.

Most children pick up phonological awareness naturally. But trouble with it can be a sign of a reading challenge. Children who struggle with word recognition and decoding usually have root in undeveloped phonological awareness.

This workshop will introduce you to the basics of phonological awareness.

The workshop aims to:

• Define phonological awareness and its significance.

• Discuss the developmental stages of phonological awareness.

• Explore several strategies and activities to promote phonological awareness.

• Explore practical applications of phonological awareness in educational settings.
