Abstract: Join us for an engaging workshop tailored for Lower Primary and Upper Primary maths teachers, aimed at fostering a cohesive understanding of mental arithmetic strategies. This session delves into the following questions, with the goal of helping Maths teachers reflect on and refine their teaching practices:
- Which mental arithmetic strategies are age-appropriate for my class?
- What are effective ways of modelling these strategies to students?
- How can the learning of strategies be built up over time?
- Future readiness: How can students’ critical thinking skills be developed through learning how to choose from a range of strategies?
Students who can identify and understand a range of different mental strategies can use more efficient strategies for any given calculation.
So, how would you answer the following question: 505 – 498 =?
Take away: Gain tips, suggestions and strategies to take back into the classroom.
