Presentation: It’s Not Me…It Is You – Taking Responsibility

Language of presentation: English (without simultaneous interpretation)

School: YCIS Hong Kong

Abstract: In the realm of education, the notion of giving students responsibility has gained significant attention due to its potential to positively impact students' growth, empowerment, and overall development. This session will explore the importance of granting students’ responsibility within the educational context, highlighting the benefits it offers in terms of personal growth, academic achievement, and the development of essential life skills.

In recent years, a noticeable decline in student responsibility has been observed, which can be attributed to various factors. This session will examine key factors such as educational structures, the widespread use of technology, and societal changes that contribute to students not assuming responsibility.

Understanding the impact of these factors on the decrease in student responsibility highlights the significance for educational institutions and stakeholders to proactively address this issue and prioritize the cultivation of responsibility among students.

The presentation will focus on the strategies that teachers can deploy to cultivate and promote the development of responsibility in their students.

Referencing and refreshing well known and used strategies such as setting clear expectations, goal setting, feedback, collaboration and group work, reflection and self-assessment. Introducing more abstract strategies like decision-making opportunities, real-world connections, ownership and the gradual release of responsibility. Sharing best practice in giving students responsibility from real life strategies.

Responsibility is crucial for students' future readiness as it equips them with the necessary skills, mindset, and accountability to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and thrive in various personal and professional contexts.
