Christine, a former writing consultant, emphasized the importance of proper sourcing at a time when Wikipedia Is Not A Source was a key rule. With a legal background specializing in copyright protections, she believes in safeguarding human creativity. Her passion for independent learning began in elementary school when she taught herself to program a VCR using only a manual.
Initially skeptical of AI, Christine realized its permanence and shifted her approach. Now, she focuses on helping students understand generative AI’s limitations—its risks of plagiarism, its inability to replace authentic writing, and the continued importance of proper sourcing in the digital age.
Workshop Overview:
This session will guide educators on integrating AI into the classroom while addressing its weaknesses. It begins with a data-driven presentation on AI’s drawbacks, followed by an interactive activity where participants design assignments that require students to critically engage with AI-generated content. Using the YCYW AI chatbot, participants will experience AI-generated responses firsthand, compare them to authentic student work, and discuss strategies for guiding students in responsible AI use. The workshop concludes with group reflections on key takeaways for classroom implementation.
