This session will delve into the current educational discourse surrounding the growing integration of technology, particularly focusing on datafication and AI. As we witness the implementation of CEFR testing, platforms like managebac, poe and even the potential shift to online exams by institutions like the IB, we recognise the benefits of these advancements in an evolving educational landscape. Amidst our enthusiasm for these technological tools, it's crucial to recognise and address the ethical considerations that accompany their use in education.
The session will centre on three key areas:
• Ethical implications of datafication: Are students informed about the use of their data? Is their data kept private?
• AI bias: Are algorithms unbiased and fair to all individuals?
• Overreliance on technology: Is the increasing reliance on technology in education potentially detrimental to students in the long run?
These ethical dilemmas remain at the forefront of critical discussions. While the conversation evolves, it is essential to remain mindful of these ethical challenges and contemplate how educators can navigate them. Moreover, we will explore ways to raise awareness of these ethical concerns among stakeholders and especially students when utilising AI tools, ensuring a responsible and informed approach to technology integration in education.
