Abstract: Do you have students in your classroom whose first language is different than the language you teach? This workshop will explore how much students use bilingual learning and translanguaging in the classroom, the positive and negative aspects, and what teachers and the school can do to help students improve academically and linguistically. After this workshop, you will have an understanding of what students think about using their first language in the classroom and how it effects their learning. You will receive practical strategies to help your students learn academically with the help of their first language.  This information was collected from student interviews at YCIS as part of my Master’s program. This information should bring a new and different perspective to this topic.
