Abstract: Many scholars argue that mathematics is a language. Compared with ordinary language, mathematical ways of communication are more rigid and efficient but also technical, abstract, and hard to grasp for many students. This workshop will review the linguistic complexity of mathematical language and share two teaching strategies: translating symbolic notation and derivation of technical terminology to foster mathematical understanding.
