Abstract:  To improve student performance and outcomes, educators should understand learning theory and pedagogy. An often overlooked area with significant implications for teaching practice is Cognitive Load Theory. British educationalist Dylan William described cognitive load theory as ‘the single most important thing for teachers to know’. Grounded in an extensive evidence base, this workshop will look into what cognitive load theory is. It will explain how much a human brain can process at any one time, the various types of cognitive loading that occurs within a classroom and how the human brain is able to process complex ideas. Finally, implications for teaching practice will be considered, and centered around a guided model of instruction, suggestions or practical ideas will be explored that teachers can incorporate into their everyday practice across subject areas and age ranges.
