Language proficiency testing is inherently complex and prone to shortcomings in either reliability or validity. Language proficiency exists across 4 modalities: receptive modalities of listening and reading and productive modalities of speaking and writing. Testing of productive language skills often errs in subjectivity and lacks reliability across different evaluators. Conversely, the testing of receptive language skills can at times lack validity in not necessarily evaluating language proficiency, but rather a student's familiarity with a particular testing format. In this workshop, the EAL team at YCIS HK Secondary will share their approach towards addressing these complexities by using an AI tool, as well as difficulties and limitations encountered with using an AI-centred approach.
